INTRODUCTION :-
The idea of complexity is originally attributed to those compounds or structures which do not always conform to the classical theories of valency. These compounds in some way deviate from the general concepts of bonding. At-present, sufficient knowledge has accumulated to elucidate the structure of these compounds on a more rati Jnal basis. However, deviations do exist.
Complex compounds are defined as those molecules in which most of the bonding structures c'an be described' by classical tneories of valency between atoms. but one or more of these bonds are somewhat anomalous.
Thus, complexes constitute a separate class of compounds which result from some type of interaction among different chemical species.
The intermolecular forces involved in the formation of complexes are:
- Covalent or coordinated bonds (Lewis acid-base type) van der Waals forces of dispersion
- Ion-dipole, dipole-dipole, dipote-induced dipole type
- Hydrogen bonding etc.
Corn plexes possess some properties which are different from those of its coinponents. Properties such as solubility. light absorption, conductance, patiitioning behaviour and chemical reactivity are studied i.o conlirn1 the formation of complexes.
Complexation behaviour is observed in a number of si tuations inc ludin.g the handling of dosage forms. It is of interest to the pharmacist. The applications of complexes in pharmacy and medicine are enutncrated be low.
